Why Do People Hate Nadal

I have some friends who follow Tennis quite religiously. There is one thing I have noticed while watching 'Federer &/ Nadal' matches with them. All of them always cheer to the shots by Fed, all of them always loathe Nadal. Whenever Federer hits a good shot, it's his class. Whenever Nadal hits a good shot he is a machine. Nadal scores because of his physical power, Federer scores because of his greatness. It all seemed so biased to me that I decided to trawl the net and see what people all over the world are talking about them.

BTW there are more google results for the search entry "why people hate Federer" than for "why people hate Nadal".

These are some of the comments I saw on a forum -

"wow… so many reasons for disliking the antipathetic topspinmonkey !!! i’ll start with his disgusting behaviour on the court…
i can’t bear this flow of negative expressions he’s showing… this ugly kid has something “evil” in the eyes…… this is visceral : i can’t bear his permanent fistpumpings (OMG when he does it while jumping or rising his leg… that’s the worst !) "

"1. Main reason. It seems to me that he doesn't respect GREATs. When he strikes some successfull shot he starts jumping, making some gestures with hands, starts looking at opponent with an anger as at enemy, as if this young kid wants to say " Look, how I have f..d you".

I imagine myself in his situation. How could I behave if I'd play against Agassi or say Federer. I think very modest. With big respect.

Concerning Agassi every player must understand in the first that he doesn't play against real Agassi, but against 35-years old Agassi. Agassi could teach such a player as Nadal if he were at age 19. Even against 35 y.o. we must recognise that Nadal won him with big difficulties.

2. Second reason. Don't like his tennis. Very primitive tennis based mainly on physical condition of the player, on his youth. Despite so many words about his bright future I tend to consider that with every year his position will worsen because his tennis is based on running, trying to get every , even impossible balls, on youth."

"I hate Rafael Nadal because he is arrogant and he pisses me off."

That's enough I think, you get the picture.

It's all illogical, don't you think? What's this 'respect' thing? Everybody has his own style of playing. I have a hypothesis about why people hate X player. It's not the only reason but It's one of the main reasons.

____People who express their thoughts are hated. [e.g. those who do 'YES!!' every two minutes] People who show their emotions - especially aggressive ones - are hated.____

I mean, C'mmon, it's a sport after all. Not a chess game, where you remain stoic.

  2. whoever hates federer is a noob
whoever hates nadal is also a noob

Both are great players, one arguably the best tennis player of all time, the other without any ambiguity whatsoever the greatest clay courter of all time. Almost all their 7 grand slam finals have been mouth watering clashes which totally lived up to and sometimes outdid the hype. I am a big federer fan, but nadal is no less a player.

  3. I think Federer and Nadal both play their best game against each other than against anyone else.Considering recent results,Nadal is overcoming Federer, but if he wants to be someone gr8 like Sampras or Federer he has to prove his consistency

  5. I like Nadal! Primarily bcoz of his fighting spirit. Although his favourite surface was clay, he has fought on all surfaces, valiently at times... Against fed, and its only since last year that his efforts have borne fruit.

That fighting spirit, that arrogance, that fist-pumping is what endears him to me. A fighter to the core, don't (or shouldn't) we all love him??!

  6. Both Federer and Nadal are both great players. The class that people talk about is visible in Federer's game. He can beat any and everyone because he is both mentally and physically strong. The cuts, cross courts, volleys and spins can hand him a game any day.
Nadal is a powerhouse of energy...the sheer force with which he hits the ball is enough to make the opponent run away. bu this shot placements are no less than that of Federer's. And it is really not fair to hate Nadal for his youth and brilliant energetic game. Those are not the rules of tennis.

What I love about their game is that the loser goes down fighting. Though from the Australian open finals it is obvious that Nadal has managed to incite fear in to Federer. It is this wall that Federer needs to break, if has to become a champion again. Nadal has already proven himself on all surfaces... he is here to stay.

PS: I am a die hard Federer fan... will root for him till the last point. But I applaud for Nadal every time...he deserves it

  7. Thanks for the thoughtful comments folks!
Let's keep federer/nadal aside for a while. All i can say is that (if at all) we like or hate some player, it tells a lot about us. We see ourselves in the shoes of our favourite player (unless,of course he's a swimmer:), and more importantly, we would like to see our 'non favourite' player beaten badly. it's this tendency that bothers me.

  9. Nadal is simply awful. He added nothing to the game. The frownhe wears on his face all the time; the absurd forehand movement termination (even if he is rich, no conscietn teacher would ever teach a pupil to hit that way); the absurd time he takes between point when he's serving; using a towel do dry himself even when there was no point disputed (a double fault or anace, for example); the butt picking; the sensation that the guy is a machine and there's nothing natural at all in his game; the sensation that the guy is obssessed, almost pathological, with winning; the fist pumping even when it was a mistake by the opponent; the fake humility; always saying that he was with some physical problem when he loses a match; the sensation that the guy could not talk about any subject atall in his life, other than tennis; ahh enough!
